The community of Hillsdale, Michigan is mourning the loss of J.J. McMillian, whose death on Thursday morning at 7:10 a.m. due to health complications has left a noticeable void across the town he helped energize for years.
Known by many nicknames including “Tribal Chief” and “Prime Pork Chop McBubbles,” J.J. McMillian was far more than a familiar face, he was a living symbol of community spirit. Whether working at local businesses like Burger King, Walmart, or Kroger, or showing up at games, he made himself known in the way most people wish they could, effortlessly and authentically.
J.J. was especially recognized for his deep connection to Hillsdale sports. For years, he served as a ball boy for Hillsdale College Charger football games and became an unofficial mascot across both Charger and Hornet athletics. During key moments, like the Hornets’ 2014 quarterfinal run, he didn’t just attend, he led the energy, rallying crowds and turning games into experiences.
What made him unforgettable wasn’t just his presence, it was how he made people feel. He knew names, gave nicknames, and made sure everyone felt seen. JJ was my best friend he still is, we’ve known each other since The Manor Foundation in Jonesville that has been closed down for a while now. Me & JJ, Ed, Bobby More, my brother Isaac Dorsey, we will get together cook outs, the county fair we would all meet up by this ride called the lightening bolt, and we would dance and it attracted a lot of people, Me and JJ got to ride rides free for attracting people by dancing it was a blast. JJ wasn’t just JJ was like a celebrity of Hillsdale, everyone loved him, he was well known, even to the unknown I felt he could have had his own empire. R.I.P Jerome J McMillian. You will never be forgotten my dear good best friend.
