Born on October 21, 1934, in Albion, Illinois, to Clifford and Nina (Tait) Brake, Don built a life rooted in education, service, and family. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1957 with a degree in education and went on to dedicate his career to the Fairfield Public School District 112, where he served as a 7th grade science teacher and shop instructor. His impact extended beyond the classroom, including organizing a stamp club at Center Street School, a reflection of his lifelong passion for stamp collecting.
On March 29, 1958, he married Susan (Childers) Brake, beginning a partnership that spanned decades. Together, they traveled to all 50 states and several countries, building a life filled with shared experiences, creativity, and connection. Don enjoyed hobbies ranging from fishing and camping to genealogy and stained glass work, even crafting and selling lamps and suncatchers.
His commitment to community was steady and wide-reaching. He supported Boy Scout Troop 170, volunteered for 17 years with the Fairfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and was an active Kiwanis member for two decades. At Cornerstone Community Church, he was known for preparing Thanksgiving meals and participating in outreach efforts like Foodtastic Fridays, helping feed local high school students.
Family remained at the center of his life. He is survived by his wife Susan, son Stephen (Stefanie) Brake, daughter Jennifer (Donald) Bolen, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. His legacy also includes the countless students he taught and the many lives he quietly influenced over the years.
